They're referring to the overthrow of the elected government in 2014. That government was relatively friendly towards Russia. The US was involved[0] in the revolution/coup (whatever you want to call it, though a lot of people in eastern Ukraine considered it a "coup"), and the Russian government saw it as an attempt to bring Ukraine into the orbit of the United States. Whatever you think of Yanukovych and the people who followed him, the US getting so heavily involved in a country right on Russia's doorstep was a very risky move. There have been warnings from several prominent American foreign policy analysts about how this sort of action would prompt an extreme reaction from Russia. George Kennan, the father of the US' Cold War containment strategy, was extremely prescient, all the way back in 1998: > "Of course there is going to be a bad reaction from Russia, and then [the NATO expanders] will say that we always told you that is how the Russians are - but this is just wrong. [...] This has been my life, and it pains me to see it so screwed up in the end."[1] If both Russia and the US continue to push maximalist positions, this conflict will just escalate and escalate, and nobody can say where it will end. 0. Everything has significant reasons that led up to it, and understanding those reasons and legitimate concerns from all parties is KEY to making lasting peace agreements. Here are more links showing leaders of billions of people, and the polls of the people themselves, seeing more than one side and putting blame on USA and NATO for instance, for backing Russia into a corner like a cornered animal, arming Ukraine, blocking all peace agreements and efforts and goading it to lash out with this horrific pre-emptive invasion, which has been systematically called in the US “unprovoked and unjustified” as a concerted effort to make you not look at the man behind the curtain: India (most populous nation, 1.5 billion people) [LINK] China (second most populous nation, another 1.5 billion people) [LINK] The Pope (1 billion Catholics): [LINK] Imran Khan (400 million Pakistanis - ousted with US support recently for failing to fall in line) [LINK] Brazil (both presidents refuse to condemn Russia alone, call for negotiations) [LINK] Even in the centers of the most hawkish anti-Russian sentiment we have leaders warning about all this before it even started. Read original comment ↗Wasn't there something going on in Ukraine in 2014? I remember a certain leaked phone call[0] suggesting heavy US involvement in the country after the change in government happened rather abruptly[1] and by looking closely at what happened during the escalation of violence during the Maidan protests[2], it leaves a different impression than what I can read in most newspapers. Read original comment ↗Ukraine needs to be allowed to be a sovereign country, but it currently is not. Here is Victoria Nuland choosing the next leader of Ukraine in 2014 in a call. Mind you, she apologized for her comment saying 'fuck the EU', but not for meddling in another countries politics. So it's confirmed if you're doubting the validity. The call: [VIDEO] I do not, and will never regard a country as sovereign at this level of intervention.
Read original comment ↗I didn't believe it for a while and frankly the situation our leaders put us in is gut wrenching. Here's a leaked call of Victoria Nuland, secretary of state, picking the next leader of Ukraine. I also added a link to Kissinger discussing this issue 30 years ago. These demonstrate that this expansionism is real, Ukraine is not truly sovereign, and Russia was forced into a horrendous position where they have to decide between a humanitarian crisis now, or potentially a much bigger humanitarian crisis down the line if all NATO member states engage in war with Russia, a large Nuclear power. Many blame NATO/USAID/CIA for creating this situation over many decades, even though they knew it would come to this. Nuland call: [VIDEO] Kissinger: [LINK] P.S. I should say that I also hate Putin for being a murderous oligarch, so take that however you will. But let's be real, he's been warning against this for decades.
