This guy's YouTube channel [0] features videos of him making stone tools, cutting down a tree, digging up clay, making a kiln, roof tiles and huts; all from scratch. His videos are a great watch, and even with heavy editing it's pretty clear how difficult it all must be. [0] [VIDEO]

Impressive! Of course technically he’s building it not by himself but with the help of a lot of technology. ;) This man is building a house including the tools you need to build that house completely by himself: Primitive Technology: Tiled Roof Hut [VIDEO]

Building a shack isn't that hard, see [VIDEO] Try building it in the forest though - it is most likely illegal due to some rentier (or government) already owning it. I think the grandparent has some truth to their words. Existing outside the dwelling is illegal. Dwellings are owned by the elite rentier class, so you need some money just to exist (unless you are a rentier).

I don't think several orders of magnitude is really true. [VIDEO] is slower than a modern house, but not that slow. Further, with just hand tools the Amish where known for raising a barn in one day.
