Free-speech videos often use the same language for legal rights, public debate and private moderation. Those are connected but different problems. Identify who has power to restrict speech and what remedy is being proposed.
A rights argument and a computing-freedom argument
Hitchens offers a forceful defense of expression as a public principle. Doctorow considers constraints on general-purpose computing and their implications for control. Watch them as arguments with identifiable premises, not current legal manuals. For a disputed case, describe the actor, the restriction, the affected audience and the institution that could reverse the decision before choosing a slogan.
Is the disputed restriction imposed by government, an employer, a platform, a device owner or another private actor?
Does a proposed remedy protect the ability to speak, the ability to reach a particular audience, or both?
Legal protections vary across jurisdictions and contexts. A philosophical defense of speech does not establish that a particular statement or platform decision is lawful.
