Separate mission design from launch spectacle

Spaceflight videos

Spaceflight combines software, hardware, operations and uncertain environments. These selections let you choose between an explanation of an Apollo-era control system and primary footage of a much later rocket test.

A computer explanation and a launch record

Wills’s Apollo Guidance Computer presentation is the better route into how limited computing resources supported a complex mission. SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy test broadcast serves a different purpose: it records a particular launch from the operator’s perspective. Use the first to ask how a system was organized; use the second to distinguish visible events from the engineering or commercial conclusions someone might draw from them. Neither alone gives a complete assessment of a space program.

Questions to take into the video

The broadcast is a historical test flight, not a statement of current capability, schedule or mission safety. Operator footage is valuable primary material with a particular viewpoint.
